Happy Belated Raqwel!

Rock-Steady Rachel (Raqwüel) had a birthday this past Monday, which is totally awesome. Fresh off a wild trip to San Antonio (so fresh and so clean), she returned to work with the ultimate present…

And while it’s hard to make a cake decorator a cake and all, Jenny, our fantabulous barista and a sometimes assistant to the manager, took it upon herself to create the cake of Rachel’s dreams. I’ve tried many a cupcake in my day, especially while living in Manhattan for years and riding the wave of cupcake revival. Yet there is one cupcake that knocks me breathless (why breathe when you can use the extra space and time for devouring more cupcake matter?). This is the story of that cupcake.

Tee & Cakes

It’s not just New York and LA where cupcakes are booming; my new home of Boulder, Colorado has quite a few cupcake-focused bakeries as well. Of these, a little fashionable cafe called Tee and Cakes stands out.

Located right off Pearl St in the heart of downtown Boulder, this cafe stands out with its stylish character and friendly staff. Oh, and did I mention the cupcakes are to die for?

What makes this bakery so great?
Let me count the ways

Moist, mouthwatering cupcakes with a wide variety of icings and toppings.
Yummy, off-the-wall flavors like beer and chocolate bacon.
Mini, half-size cupcakes to satisfy those urges without requiring liposuction.
Fair trade brews and rich, foamy cappucinos made with Boulder Organic Coffee.
Friendly staff.

But don’t take my word for it
According to their press page, Tee & Cakes is famous. They’ve been featured on local news stations, The Onion, The Knot, and even Food Network. Yum!

29th Annual Chocolate Lover’s Fling

For the last 28 years the Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence has been putting on this wonderful event full of Boulder’s finest chocolate choices. We were honored to be a participant in Chocolate Lover’s Fling this year. As you all know, cupcakes are a super awesome way to get your chocolate fix. We chose our famous Chocolate Bacon Cupcake, our soon-to-be famous Salted Caramel Cupcake that has a chocolate cake, and our most popular seller, the Red Velvet Cupcake — except we added chocolate icing in place of our standard vanilla. Raqwel — a talented and fine baker — along with Megzz – an expert in cupcake sales as well as the world’s best listener — helped us out that night. Make sure you go next year if you missed it.

Yah! All-star barista and super-employee Jenny graduated yesterday! We crafted a chef’s interpretation of Jenny as a cake. Carrot cake and chai cream cheese icing filled this glorious, sunshiny cake.
